REVIEWS/An Angle, InMemory, Jet Motor Crash, The Key Club, Hollywood, CA 08/14/05

Though The Keyclub may look like a dance club from the outside, once you enter, you know its main level is just like any other small venue on the sunset strip. A total of seven bands were slated to play.

Nothing spectacular came out of either Scenic Attraction or Brown Eyed Deception. They were not bad, just okay. Typical opening bands.

A gaggle of females were present with homemade “The Higher” shirts. I hoped this was a sign that The Higher would be good. Again, not bad, just not too impressive. One of the guitarists was having problems with his peddles’ chords which caused it to randomly stop working. For 2-3 songs the problem kept reoccurring, but the band was able to make due really well. A member from Brown Eyed Deception came to the rescue with some chords. While the chords were being switched out, the lead singer sang some N’sync, then joked about Justin Timberlake. All was back to good and The Higher played the last 10 minutes of their set. By the way, the lead singer seriously looks like an Olsen twin.

Let’s a play a game of “which one doesn’t belong with the others?” The answer would be Jet Motor Crash. At least half of the band probably worships Motley Crue, Poison, etc. They took too long to get their crap together, and it was not worth the wait. The lead singer’s vocal assault on the crowd did not get anyone excited. Every song sounded just like the next. By the third song, the entire band, as well as the music, was just annoying as hell. The bassist was good, and the lead guitarist took his time to shine, but overall it was just loud and obnoxious over-the-top hard rock.

The biggest crowd for the entire night formed for So-Cal locals, InMemory. Completely fantastic from beginning to end. Their songs “American Bachelor” and “Accents Are Overrated” were merged into one, called “American Accents.” Chords were tangled so bad at one point that lead singer, Marco, was on the ground singing and figuring out the tangle between his microphone and Davith’s guitar. Marco also put his hand down his pants every now and then, humped a monitor, and did a mock ass slap dance- It was all quite entertaining. The band played about 6 songs in total, including the crowd favorite “Accents Are Overrated.” It was over way too quickly, and the crowd stuck around wanting more. Marco started a sing-along to “My First Time” while the rest of the band cleared off their equipment.

The crowd all about disappeared before An Angle came on stage. Kris Anaya started off the set playing a solo song, but for the second song the stage was full of people. The people were super peppy and it almost reminded me of a children’s sing-along show. If you like An Angle’s album , you will absolutely love it live.

I was really looking forward to how Jenoah’s live set has evolved since I saw them last year, but sadly I was unable to stay for their performance.
