Before an in depth conversation about PETA and George W. Bush, and
after a slightly less formal chat about old people and multi-vitamins for men,
two Concert Hype staff members witnessed an extraordinary spectacle- a
thirty minute concert played by Jupiter Sunrise.
“Everybody’s got problems and things they worry about. It’s definitely
fun to come to a rock show and forget about those things and kind of come
to a utopian kind of place where everybody’s pretty positive and happy with
each other just to have a good time” – Chris.
Chris’s perspective towards the importance of going to concerts comes
through in the attitude of their sets. Even with only thirty minutes to
rock, they showed us multiple, changing views of their band. Jupiter
Sunrise went from pop-rock, to folk, to heavy metal instantaneously. They showed us what they can do as a band for their audience. Starting with a heavy
pop-rock atmosphere, the band introduced themselves to the bar audience
with flexibility, talent and energy. They lit up the stage and exposed the
viewers to great song writing skills and personal understanding of the
crowd. As Mark says, “That’s why I write songs: to understand.”
When technical problems kept Jupiter Sunrise from playing an ordinary
set, they resorted to a method mostly forgotten by rock. Jupiter Sunrise
stands out creatively and musically for this reason. Aaron sat on the edge of
the stage as Ben, Mark and Chris came into the center of the crowd and had
the audience sit in a circle surrounding them, campfire-style, as they
played their ballad ‘Steal Me’ from their album ‘Under A Killer Blue Sky.’
This action caused quite an aura. The foursome entranced every person in
attendance. All went silent, feeling as though they were witnessing
some rare gift. Nearly everyone in that room became a fan that night. No one
left Jupiter Sunrise’s performance expecting more. All in the band agree,
“We don’t want everyone to love us, because that would just be weird.” As
weird as it is, it is starting to come true.
The band Jupiter Sunrise is unique in the world of music for two
imperative reasons. They have endless openness to change as demonstrated by their acoustic floor demonstration sandwiched between pop-rock and
mosh-worthy punk. They also stand out because of their diverse album sound. Their music can appeal to everybody because every song captures a different style of music making. Ben and Mark also share the role of lead singer, bringing
layers to the continuously varying sound on ‘Under A Killer Blue Sky.’
Mark explained during our interview, “Doing what I’m doing now is the first
and only dream I’ve ever had in life and I’m pretty lucky to finally be
able to do it.” Concert Hype is also lucky for having met Jupiter Sunrise at
this point in their journey. Jupiter Sunrise will be around for a long time
and Concert Hype will be there to support them every step of the way.
