Let me just start this review right off with some advice: never miss the opening band(s) at a show. If they completely suck, you'll have some humorous material to discuss on the drive home. If they completely rock faces off, you'll regret it for...at least a day or two.
You must know where this is going. Yes, my guest and I missed all but one and a half songs of the opening band. And yes, I was disappointed. From what I DID hear, Damone is one of those female-fronted Rock bands that I could actually picture myself listening to, and that's uncommon for me when it comes to female vocalists. That's really all I have to say about that.
Rock 'N' Roll Soldiers hit the stage next. I've been trying to figure out which band it is that they resemble, and all I can come up with is the Blood Brothers. Even then, it was only the vocals on a few songs that led me to think that. I'm going to have to give their stuff a few more listens. I definitely thought they had a ton of energy up on stage, and the crowd's reaction proved they agreed as well.
And then... the single reason I made the decision to attend this show in the first place: A Wilhelm Scream. Yes. The two previous times I witnessed the band's live show in the twin cities, they blew me away. Their live show is unreal, and add in an intense level of crowd participation in every single song, and you can only imagine the goodness that can come from these men.
But, if I had to pick a least favorite performance of the three that I've seen of the band, Wednesday's show would probably be it. Before I say anymore, I need to make it clear that my reason for deeming this particular show my least favorite is all due to billing. I just didn't feel that Damone, Rock 'N' Roll Soldiers, and A Wilhelm Scream fit with Less Than Jake. Less Than Jake was the oddball, and I thought A Wilhelm Scream suffered due to it. The crowd was certainly into the band on a number of songs, namingly "Me Vs. Morrissey", "Killing It", "The King Is Dead", and "The Kids Can Eat A Bag Of Dicks", but not the way I've seen in the past. Too many Less Than Jake fans were standing around waiting for "their" band to hit the stage.
It's too bad their band's frontman couldn't keep his "hilarious" comments to himself. Luckily for him, Less Than Jake has been successful enough that he doesn't have to worry about a future, or lack there of, in comedy. Other than that, the band put on an entertaining show. Something about watching the trombone and sax players play makes me smile. The fake snow and confetti blown into the crowd was a nice touch, as well. Seeing as how this IS Minnesota, I had to laugh a bit.
